Singleton Urquhart LLP is a Vancouver-based law firm that has had a long history of supporting the law school at UBC. This donation was a further example of the outstanding support provided by the Vancouver legal community to the law school’s building project. UBC recognized Singleton Urquhart's gift with the naming of a group study room in the new law school building.
"Our Firm has had a longstanding connection with the Law School. We were happy to make this gift," said Jeffrey A. Hand, Managing Partner. John R. Singleton, QC added, "we are proud to support the excellence of UBC Law in this way, helping to assure its leadership in legal education in North America for years to come."
The firm was established in 1986, and has grown from its initial base of providing legal services to the insurance industry, principally in the areas of construction and professional liability defence work, to now providing services in the areas of general insurance, environmental, municipal, business and corporate commercial, as well as employment and business immigration law. Singleton Urquhart is also known for its expertise in alternative dispute resolution in the fields of mediation and arbitration.
Singleton Urquhart is committed to supporting community-oriented organizations in the Vancouver Lower Mainland. The firm supports local charities, and has been extensively involved in its support of continuing legal education in British Columbia.
Singleton Urquhart has supported the law school through donations to student awards and course prizes, including the Singleton Urquhart Prize in Torts, the Allan McEachern Prize in Criminal Law, the Robert S. Reid Award in Law, and the Richard Sugden Trial Advocacy Endowment. In addition, members of the firm have shared their expertise with law students as adjunct professors.
