Howard Ehrlich was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, to David Ehrlich, an Auschwitz survivor, and his wife Grace. He studied at the University of British Columbia, where he obtained his undergraduate degree, before obtaining his law degree in 1981. He continued legal studies at Southern Methodist University in Texas, obtaining an LLM before returning to practice in Vancouver.
Ehrlich joined the labour law practice at Davis & Company, before moving to Bull, Housser & Tupper in 1987 to help establish that firm's labour and employment law group. A short year later, in 1988, Ehrlich was a partner. For decades he was a diligent lawyer, adapting his practice with changes in labour law, such as the rise of human rights legislation. He was expert who shared his experience through presentations and articles, and even as an instructor at UBC. He was praised as an ideal mentor, appreciated for his care and guidance.
Ehrlich was also one of the first openly gay practicing lawyers in Vancouver. He came out at a time when being open risked overshadowing his career or invoking the fear of a time when HIV was prevalent and without treatment. He lost his first love, Billy, to HIV in 1995. Ehrlich continued to live an out life, volunteering with the Vancouver Pride Society, participating in men's sports, and eventually falling in love with Leo, who was his partner for the rest of his life.
Ehrlich was known for his keen mind, as well as his decency and humanity. He liked a good joke or the odd prank, and was quick with his humour.
Howard Ehrlich passed away in 2015.
