Allard School of Law Professor Janis Sarra has been awarded a YWCA Women of Distinction Award. Professor Sarra is an internationally recognized expert in corporate finance, banking and securities regulation, who has published ten books and more than one hundred refereed articles. She is known for her innovation and leadership.
As Director of the Peter Wall Institute at UBC, she was responsible for creating new programs of research and education, connecting early-career female scholars to world-leading researchers, supporting innovative interdisciplinary research. In 2007, Professor Sarra was recognized for her research achievements that have advanced the Faculty’s reputation as a leading research institution as a recipient of an Allard Law Alumni Association Alumni Award for Research.
As founding Director of the UBC Centre for Business Law, she helped educate and place women in business and finance, developing innovative new courses to ensure all law students, but particularly women, are well prepared to assume leadership roles.
Recognized nationally as one of Canada's most prestigious awards for women, the Women of Distinction Awards honour women whose outstanding achievements contribute to the well-being and future of our community. Professor Sarra was honoured in the category of Education, Training and Development.
The awards came just a few weeks after Professor Sarra was appointed UBC Presidential Distinguished Professor, an honour that recognizes faculty who have made outstanding contributions as scholars and academic leaders. Professor Sarra was appointed UBC Presidential Distinguished Professor effective May 1, 2014 for a three year term. The UBC Presidential Distinguished Professor recognizes faculty who have made outstanding contributions as scholars and academic leaders.
