Nick A. Blom was born and raised in Wassenaar, on the west coast of Holland. At Christmas of his Grade 9 year, he immigrated with his family to Canada, settling in Pitt Meadows in early 1953. He completed high school in Port Moody, and enrolled at the University of British Columbia. He graduated with a BA in Math and Economics in 1959. Being unsure of what to do next, and realizing that a law degree gave the broadest choice of careers after graduation, Blom enrolled in law school and graduated from UBC in 1962.
He articled at Ladner Downs, where he would stay for the next 18 years of his career. He developed a broad real estate practice and was heavily involved with the firm's administration, including a more than 2 year period of serving as the firm's managing partner.
In 1980, Mr. Blom was invited by his client Grosvenor International to become the Chief Operating Officer for its Canadian Operating Company. He spent 12 years with the company, managing a significant portfolio including industrial and retail properties, as well as the development of office buildings and industrial facilities. He became a Senior VP with Grosvenor's parent company, with a mandate to create joint venture for property investment with international pension funds.
Nick Blom returned to working as Counsel when he joined McCarthy Tetrault's Vancouver office in 1992. He continued to practice in real estate, especially with a focus on pension funds or pension fund owned entities. After 13 years with the firm he retired, but continues to work part time for Cadillac Fairview.
He has maintained strong community involvement throughout his life with the Rotary Club of Vancouver. He's served as it's President twice, and as President of their related foundation for assisting the deaf and hearing impaired.
