Last week marked the wrap-up of the Kawaskimhon Moot, and with it, the end of Aboriginal Awareness Week at the law school. From February 25 to March 6, 2011, a series of events brought together students, scholars and legal practitioners to raise awareness and engage in dialogue around legal issues that impact Canada's Aboriginal communities.

A group study room in the library of the new law building was named after the Calgary-based law firm Bennett Jones, in honor of a generous gift of $125,000 toward the construction of the new building. This gift is significant in reflecting the leadership and commitment of UBC alumni at Bennett Jones.

Allard School of Law's Peer Tutoring Program has been recognized as the winner of the Helen McCrae Award, a prize offered by the Office of the Vice-President to recognize exceptional contributions or significant improvements to the student experience and learning environment at UBC. The Peer Tutoring Program is one of a number of initiatives undertaken by the Faculty of Law in recent years to improve the student experience.

The Indigenous Legal Studies Program (ILSP) was pleased to announce the launch of the Specialization in Aboriginal Law. The Specialization is open to all JD students and is the natural evolution of the broad range of courses covering Aboriginal law and Indigenous legal issues currently offered.

In 2008, UBC announced a partnership with Hong Kong University to establish the Trans-Pacific Joint Legal Education Program. Graduates of this program will be able to practice law in both Hong Kong and Canada. 

UBC honours Dean George F. Curtis by establishing a new Dean's and Students' Government Suite in his name. Dean Curtis was appointed as the founding Dean of the law school in 1945, and served in this capacity until 1971. He is remembered for extraordinary efforts in expanding the Faculty and his emphasis on close connections between the students and the faculty. 

Richards Buell Sutton LLP generously donated $1 million to help facilitate the construction of the new law building. In this picture, Managing Partner Jeffrey Lowe (centre) is joined by Dean Bobinski and LSS President Matt Brandon.
